Iowa State University defeated the South Dakota Coyotes 8-0 in a five-inning softball game on April 14, following a weather delay at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.
The matchup was affected by both strong play from Iowa State and challenging weather conditions. The Cyclones scored four runs in the first inning and another four in the fifth to secure a run-rule victory over South Dakota.
South Dakota managed only two hits during the game, both recorded by Kiya Johnson. Peyton Paulsen started as pitcher for South Dakota and allowed five hits over 4.2 innings against Iowa State’s offense. Jaiden Ralston of Iowa State earned the win, improving her record to 2-5, while Paulsen took the loss and moved to 3-8.
The game’s momentum shifted early when Iowa State manufactured their first run after a walk and passed ball put a runner in scoring position. A three-run home run later in the inning extended their lead before play was halted for nearly an hour due to a pop-up storm nearby. After play resumed, Paulsen held Iowa State scoreless for three innings before an error and subsequent grand slam by Isabelle Nosan ended the contest under run-rule regulations.
South Dakota will return to Summit League action with an upcoming series against North Dakota’s Fighting Hawks from April 17 to April 19 in Grand Forks.
