South Dakota men’s basketball head coach Eric Peterson announced on Apr. 20 that Josh Townley-Thomas will join the team’s roster for the 2026-27 season. Townley-Thomas, who is from Omaha, Nebraska, will transfer to South Dakota after spending three years at Creighton.
Townley-Thomas appeared in ten games during his sophomore year at Creighton and started the 2025-26 season with promise before a season-ending injury in the opener against South Dakota. In that game on November 5, he scored six points while shooting three-of-four from the field in five minutes of play. He was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court for the 2024-25 academic year and has twice been selected for the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. He redshirted his first year at Creighton during the 2023-24 season.
Before transferring to Creighton, Townley-Thomas played his freshman college season at North Platte Community College. There, he participated in twenty games and averaged 4.4 points and 5.2 rebounds per game over nearly seventeen minutes of play each contest. He collected a total of one hundred fifty rebounds—including fifty-six offensive boards—shot just over fifty-two percent from the field, and blocked twenty-five shots.
During his high school career, Townley-Thomas helped lead Creighton Prep Junior Jays to a state semifinals appearance in 2022.
The addition of Townley-Thomas brings experience and depth to South Dakota’s roster as they look ahead to future seasons.
