South Dakota track and field athletes competed in the first day of the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and the SDSU Classic in Brookings, South Dakota, on Friday. Mason Sindelar set a new school record in the men’s 800 meters at the Tyson Invitational with a time of 1:48.62. This performance placed him fourth in the event, ranked 47th nationally for the NCAA season, and is currently the fastest time recorded in the Summit League this year.
Other notable performances at the Tyson Invitational included Tommy Hensley running 1:51.34 in the men’s 800 meters, earning him seventh place on South Dakota’s all-time indoor list. In pole vaulting, three Coyote men cleared heights of 17 feet or better; Caelan Harland and Wyatt Stewart took first and second place respectively by clearing 17-6½, while Beau Karst achieved a season best with his clearance of 17-0¾.
In hurdle events, Jaden Damiano finished ninth in the preliminaries of the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.89 seconds, followed by Mikael Grace who placed fifteenth at 8.01 seconds. Geneva Timmerman finished eighth in the women’s championship division of the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:30.15.
Drew Beason set a personal best in the women’s university division of the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:43.09 for seventeenth place. Her performance ranks as eighth fastest in South Dakota indoor history and is second among Summit League runners so far this season.
At the SDSU Classic, Isaac Ochoa finished second in the men’s 3,000 meters with a time of 8:13.19—this result is now fourth fastest on South Dakota’s all-time indoor list.
Four Coyotes updated their standings within South Dakota’s Indoor Top Ten marks on Friday:
– Mason Sindelar (1st) and Tommy Hensley (7th) for men’s 800 meters,
– Isaac Ochoa (4th) for men’s 3,000 meters,
– Drew Beason (8th) for women’s 3,000 meters.
The competition will continue Saturday with day two scheduled to begin at both venues at 10:30 a.m.
